Wheelchairs Against Guns
Wheelchairs Against Guns, commonly referred to as WAG, is an organization comprised of men who are permanently disabled
as a result of gun violence.
Refusing to accept a life of despair and self pity, these individuals reflected upon the life choices that lead to their disabilities and realized their unfortunate circumstance could serve as a catalyst for change.
Newly inspired, they formed a non-profit organization with the mission of educating inner city youth on the dangers of bullying,
gangs, and gun violence.
Each week Luis Lopez and the organization’s founder, Kareem Nelson (who is also in a wheelchair), visit inner city schools, churches, and jails to mentor at-risk youth and conduct anti-violence workshops. The workshops are deeply immersive and designed to educate and communicate with the students in a way they recognize as being “real”.
Students learn life-saving skills, such as critical thinking and conflict resolution strategies through participation in interactive discussions and situational role playing. These exercises teach students the decision making abilities they need to quickly recognize potentially dangerous situations and the appropriate steps they should take to avoid guns and violence in their neighborhoods.
